BESS & Cyber Security
“The battery project was a huge success. You could feel the energy in the room” 🤣
“BESS professionals are naturally optimistic. They're surrounded by positive energy”
Ok no more…I’ll get my coat!
Jokes aside…lets get a little more serious…
As most people are aware, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are now playing a critical role in the energy transition, helping integrate renewables, support grid stability, ensure energy surplus is not wasted and create new revenue opportunities. However, as these assets become ever more connected, like most products, they become more exposed to cyber threats.
That’s not a surprise given that the Energy sector is under constant attack from cyber threats.
So, what could a cyber-attack actually achieve on a BESS environment? Well, it could disrupt operations, impact energy trading activities, compromise safety and control systems such as the BMS and EMS and ultimately affect revenue, not good! With multiple suppliers, cloud platforms, remote access solutions, and operational technologies involved, the attack surface is often much larger than organisations realise as sometimes the focus is on the immediate landscape, not the horizon.
For investors and operators, cyber risk is increasingly becoming a material business consideration. Weak cyber security can result in unexpected remediation costs, reduced asset value, operational downtime, and greater scrutiny during investment transactions.
But its not all doom and gloom.
Organisations that invest in cyber security early can gain a real competitive advantage. Strong cyber governance can accelerate any due diligence process, improve investor confidence, support asset valuations, reduce operational disruption, and strengthen relationships with regulators and partners.
As the BESS market matures, cyber security is becoming more than a compliance requirement. It is emerging as a key enabler of growth, operational resilience, and of course long-term value creation. 💷
In the future the most successful BESS operators will be those that recognise cyber security not simply as a cost of doing business, but as a strategic investment that protects revenue and unlocks future market opportunities. What’s not to like about that!
The TPCS Takeaway - In the BESS market, cyber security is no longer just risk management. It's a source of competitive advantage that allows companies to grow and scale securely and underpin revenue with operational excellence.
